At the time I thought this was just a quirk of how my brain worked. What I didn't know is that I was experiencing one of the most well-documented phenomena in memory research: context-dependent memory. Your environment during learning doesn't just happen to be present while you learn. It becomes part of what you learn. The physical setting gets encoded alongside the material, and the setting becomes a retrieval cue that can help you access the material later. This isn't metaphorical. It's how episodic memory actually works. And the degree to which this helps or hurts your learning depends significantly on whether you're paying attention to your environment during study.
Here's the part that took me longer to accept. Most learners treat their environment as background… the place where learning happens, but not part of the learning itself. What the research shows is that this framing misses something important. The environment isn't just where learning happens. It's part of how learning happens. Attending to your environment deliberately during study creates memory hooks that inattentive learning doesn't create. The Research Picture
Let me start with what the science actually shows about how environment and memory interact.
According to research on context-dependent memory, environmental context refers to incidental information about the environment in which the focal information is processed. The environmental context is encoded with the focal information into an episodic-memory trace, and is used as a retrieval cue at the time of remembering. Environmental context dependency is one of the most important characteristics of episodic memory. Read this carefully. When you learn something, your brain doesn't just encode the information… it encodes the setting as well. The setting then becomes a hook that can help you access the information later. This is a fundamental feature of how human memory works, not a bug or an edge case.
The role of attention during encoding is what makes this practically useful. According to research on the phenomenon, in 2003, Chu et al. demonstrated that conscious effort and attention is important to overcome context-dependent forgetting. Their research has shown that active processing of the context during the encoding phase is an important factor of successful performance. When actively attending to environmental cues with the goal of using a technique such as the context recall technique, stronger associations are created between the material and the environment. The key phrase is "active processing." Passive presence in an environment produces weak environmental encoding. Active attention to the environment produces strong encoding. Which means the learner who notices their surroundings while studying builds stronger memory hooks than the learner who's oblivious to where they are.
The meta-analytic evidence supports this. According to a comprehensive review, across all studies, environmental context effects were reliable, and furthermore, that the use of noncontextual cues during learning (overshadowing) and at test (outshining), as well as mental reinstatement of appropriate context cues at test, all reduce the effect. The effect is real. It's replicated across many studies. And crucially, it's affected by how much you pay attention to context during learning. The learner who's absorbed in the material and ignoring the environment gets less benefit from context-dependent memory than the learner who periodically attends to their surroundings.
Why This Matters More Than It Seems Like It Should
Let me name why environmental awareness during learning is actually useful in practice.
It creates additional retrieval pathways. When you encode material along with rich environmental context, you have multiple ways to get back to it later. You can access the material through its content. You can access it through the setting where you learned it. You can access it through what you were doing when you learned it. More paths to memory means more reliable retrieval. Learners who ignore their environment during study have fewer paths.
It reveals when retrieval will be harder. The context-dependency effect tells you something important: material learned in one context is somewhat harder to retrieve in a different context. This has implications for how you should study. If you'll be tested in one specific context (an exam room, a specific work situation), studying only in different contexts means you're building retrieval that might be harder to access when you need it. Being aware of the context effect lets you plan around it.
It works with distributed practice. Varying your study environment (actively attending to different settings across sessions) produces retrieval that's less tied to any one context. According to the research, this varied-context approach can produce more robust memory than always studying in the same place, precisely because you're building multiple environmental hooks rather than just one. In Elden Ring terms, you're grinding experience in multiple regions rather than farming the same one, which builds more transferable capability.
It helps with recall in novel situations. If you're studying something you'll eventually apply in real-world contexts you can't predict, the ability to retrieve regardless of environment matters. Being aware of environment during study, and deliberately varying it, builds this kind of context-independent memory better than passive study in one setting.
It supports what psychologists call encoding specificity. The principle that retrieval works best when the retrieval conditions match the encoding conditions. Being aware of encoding conditions (including environment) means you can either match them at retrieval time or deliberately train against dependence on them.
What Environmental Awareness Actually Looks Like
Let me get specific about what paying attention to your environment during learning means in practice, because "be aware of your surroundings" is too vague to act on.
Notice sensory details. During your study sessions, periodically bring your attention to what you're hearing, seeing, smelling, feeling. Not for hours… just brief moments of attention. The temperature of the room. The sounds in the background. The visual details of your workspace. The specific chair you're sitting in. These details become the environmental context that gets encoded alongside your material.
Note where you learned specific things. When you have breakthroughs or particular understandings during study, briefly note the physical context. "I finally understood this concept while sitting at the corner table of the coffee shop." This deliberate association creates a stronger link between the material and the environment than passive encoding would produce.
Vary your locations deliberately. According to research on the context effect, by moving individuals from room to room, they may pay more attention to the environmental cues. Studying in multiple locations doesn't just support varied encoding… it also increases your awareness of environment because change draws attention. The learner who studies in three different locations across a week attends more to each of those environments than the learner who always sits in the same spot.
Match study conditions to test conditions when it matters. For high-stakes recall in specific contexts (an exam, a presentation, a job interview), do some of your study in conditions that approximate the actual retrieval context. If you'll be sitting in a quiet room during an exam, some of your study should be in similar quiet rooms. This isn't superstition. The context-matching produces measurable retrieval advantages.
Or deliberately break context-dependency when you can't match. If you know you'll need to retrieve material in unpredictable contexts, deliberately study in varied environments to build context-independent memory. Notice each environment as you study in it. The variety plus the awareness produces the least context-dependent memory.
Use mental reinstatement when needed. According to the meta-analysis, mental reinstatement of appropriate context cues at test can reduce the effect. If you're trying to remember something and struggling, mentally picturing the environment where you learned it can help retrieval. This is why my café example at the start of this newsletter worked… my brain was using café memories as retrieval cues for the material.
How to Actually Use This
Okay, the practical part. Based on the research and my own experience, here's how to actually apply environmental awareness to improve your learning.
Start each study session with a brief environmental check-in. Take 30 seconds at the start of a study session to actually notice where you are. The specific setting. What's around you. What you can hear. This isn't meditation… it's just brief deliberate attention to establish the environmental context you're about to encode alongside your material.
Take brief environmental notes when you have insights. When you have a moment of understanding, breakthrough, or particular clarity, note where you were. Just briefly. "Understood the tricky part while pacing in the kitchen." This creates the association that makes retrieval easier later.
Deliberately vary locations across weeks. Especially for long-term learning projects, use multiple study locations rather than always the same one. Not for every session… consistency also has benefits. But across a week or a month, rotate through 2-4 different environments. This builds varied context encoding that's more robust than single-context memory.
Use environmental transitions between subjects. If you're switching between different subjects or types of learning, changing environment between them can help. The environmental change signals to your brain that a different type of encoding is happening, which can support retrieval by category later. Studying math in one spot and history in another creates separate contextual associations.
When high-stakes retrieval is coming, do some review in matching conditions. If you have an exam in a specific room type, an interview in a specific setting, or a presentation in a specific context, do some of your final preparation in similar conditions. Not all of it. But enough that some of your material is encoded with contextual cues matching your retrieval context.
Use environmental cues for spaced repetition. When you're returning to material after a gap, briefly notice where you're doing the review. This creates additional environmental contexts associated with the same material, building the multi-context encoding that supports flexible retrieval.
Don't obsess. This isn't a technique you have to apply constantly. Brief awareness at key moments (session start, moments of insight, subject transitions) is enough. Continuous environmental monitoring during study would just be distracting from the material itself.
What This Doesn't Mean
Some honest caveats.
Environment isn't more important than content. The material you're studying is still the primary thing. Environmental awareness is a supplement that improves encoding and retrieval, not a substitute for engaging with the actual material.
Individual variation is real. Some people naturally attend to environment more than others. Some find it distracting to deliberately attend to surroundings. Pay attention to what actually works for you rather than forcing a specific practice.
Not every learning task needs this. For material that's genuinely complex and requires full attention, extensive environmental monitoring might actively hurt. Match the level of environmental attention to what the task allows.
Context-dependency isn't absolute. The research shows the effect exists, but it's not so strong that you'll be helpless without matching contexts. Your knowledge is portable. Environmental awareness is a supporting factor, not a determining one.
Extreme environmental switching can be counterproductive. Constantly changing locations disrupts the routine and consistency that also matter for learning. The goal is thoughtful variety, not chaotic switching.
The Bigger Lesson
Here's what I want you to take from all this. Your environment during learning isn't just backdrop… it's part of what you're encoding. Attending to it deliberately, even briefly, creates memory hooks that inattentive learning doesn't create. This is one of those small variables that seems trivial in any single session but compounds across the many sessions of a serious learning project.
If you've been treating your study environment as pure background, please consider that a small amount of deliberate attention to where you are might improve what you retain from your sessions. The intervention costs almost nothing… just brief moments of noticing during natural pauses in your work. The benefits accumulate over the many sessions that make up any real learning project.
Your brain is context-sensitive in ways evolution baked in for good reasons. Locations mattered enormously for survival… where you found food, where predators lurked, where safety could be found. Your memory system was built with environmental encoding as a core feature. Using this feature deliberately, rather than ignoring it, is one of the small edges available to serious learners.
In Metroid, Samus doesn't just accumulate abilities in a vacuum. Each ability she gains is tied to the specific location where she found it, and returning to those locations later evokes the abilities she associates with them. Your knowledge works similarly. Where you learned things becomes part of how you access them. Being aware of this connection lets you use it deliberately. Not doing so leaves value on the table.
Notice where you are while you learn. Not obsessively. Just enough to let your environment become part of your memory rather than accidental background. The small habit produces benefits across every learning project you take on for the rest of your life. Small change. Real returns.
