According to research from the University of Michigan, simply placing your phone in another room during conversations or focused work improves cognitive performance by reducing the "attention residue" that lingers when your modern mind knows the device is accessible. Read this carefully. The phone doesn't need to be actively distracting you to be impairing you. The knowledge that it's accessible (the "attention residue") is enough to consume cognitive resources. Physical distance from the device produces measurable cognitive improvement even when the device is doing nothing.
Why Disconnection Specifically Helps Learning
Let me get specific about the mechanisms, because understanding them helps you disconnect strategically rather than randomly.
Cognitive resource recovery. As I covered above, connected life depletes cognitive resources continuously. Disconnection allows those resources to replenish. This isn't just about feeling less tired… it's about having more capacity available for the effortful cognitive work that learning requires. The disconnected brain has more resources to allocate to deep engagement than the connected brain does.

As I've written about in previous newsletters, your default mode network is the brain network that handles memory consolidation, connection-making, and creative integration. It activates specifically when you're not focused on external tasks. Constant device use keeps you focused on external inputs continuously, which suppresses DMN activation. Disconnection allows the DMN to run, which enables the kind of cognitive processing that produces insights and integration.
Prefrontal cortex restoration. The Strayer research specifically identified the prefrontal cortex as needing 72 hours to reset. This is the brain region most centrally involved in executive function… the specific capabilities you use for planning, focused attention, working memory, and complex decision-making. Disconnection lets this system recalibrate.
Space for consolidation. New learning needs time to consolidate, and consolidation happens best during periods of low external input. Constant technology use fills every gap that would otherwise be consolidation time. Disconnected time provides these gaps, which lets your recent learning actually solidify into durable memory.
The Practical Framework
Okay, the practical part. Understanding that disconnection helps doesn't tell you what to actually do. Here's the framework that works, based on the research and my own experience.
Daily micro-disconnections. Multiple times per day, put your phone in another room and work without it accessible. Nightly evening disconnection. Have a specific time when devices go away for the night. The specific hour matters less than having a consistent time. This protects sleep quality, which protects memory consolidation from your day's learning.

It's about having predictable windows when you're operating in the disconnected mode. Your brain benefits from experiencing this mode regularly, not just when you happen to accidentally end up in it.

This might be a vacation, a weekend camping trip, or any deliberate period where you're actually off the grid for that long. What Disconnection Isn't

This isn't about isolation. As I've covered in previous newsletters, social connection is important for cognitive function. Disconnection from devices doesn't mean disconnection from people. Some of the best disconnected time is spent with other humans who are also disconnected.
This isn't a full solution. Disconnection helps but doesn't solve everything. Sleep, exercise, nutrition, meaningful learning practices… all the foundations I've covered in previous newsletters still matter. Disconnection is one component of a broader system, not a magic bullet.
Not everyone needs the same amount. Individual variation is real. Some people function well with less disconnection than others. Pay attention to your own patterns rather than assuming universal amounts are right for you.
What This Looks Like In Practice
Let me get concrete about what a week with strategic disconnection might look like for a learner.
Daily: Phone in another room during focused study sessions. When breaks happen, physically go somewhere else rather than immediately checking devices. Some meals eaten without devices present.
Evening: Devices go away an hour before bed. Reading time in bed is with physical books or ebook readers without notifications, not with phones. Bedroom is a device-free space.
Weekly: One morning or afternoon per week is deliberately device-free. This might be a Saturday morning walk with your phone left at home, or Sunday afternoon reading in a park with only a physical book.
Monthly: One full day or overnight of substantial disconnection. Not necessarily off-grid… but with phone use minimized and no work-related connectivity.
Quarterly: A weekend or longer where you're genuinely disconnected for 72+ hours. Camping, a retreat, a vacation where you don't check work, or any situation where sustained disconnection is structural rather than requiring willpower.
None of this is dramatic. All of it is doable. And the cumulative effect on cognitive function is substantial across months and years of practice.
The Bigger Lesson
Here's what I want you to take from all this. The cognitive environment most modern people live in (continuous connection to devices, constant availability of external input, no natural periods of disconnection) is not what human brains evolved for. This mismatch produces specific cognitive costs that we mostly don't attribute correctly. The stuck-ness, the fatigue, the difficulty focusing, the depleted feeling of connected life. These aren't inherent features of your brain. They're what happens when your brain runs continuously in a mode it wasn't designed for.
Deliberate disconnection reintroduces the natural rhythm your cognitive systems expect. Not through dramatic renunciation of technology, but through structural windows when devices aren't accessible. These windows let your prefrontal cortex reset, your default mode network activate, your cognitive resources replenish, your dopamine system recalibrate. All the things that constant connection prevents.
