I want to start with a specific pattern I've noticed across many of my most successful learning projects. When I've been focused on a main goal (learning a specific skill, mastering a specific domain, developing a specific capability) the projects that produced the deepest results almost always included specific side activities that complemented the main work in strategic ways. Not distractions from the main goal. Not scattered attention across multiple unrelated projects. Deliberately chosen adjacent activities that amplified what the main learning was producing.
For years, I couldn't quite articulate why this pattern worked. I'd notice that a language learning project that included regular conversations with native speakers produced dramatically different results than the same amount of study without conversations. A programming project that included reading other people's code produced different capability than the same amount of solo coding. A learning arc that included teaching others produced different retention than the same arc without teaching. These weren't just cases of "more time on the topic produces more learning." The specific side activities were doing specific work that the main study couldn't accomplish on its own.
I've written before in this newsletter about various individual learning practices… teaching others, active recall, project-based learning, and many others. What I want to give you today is a specific framework for thinking about the side activities alongside your main learning goal. Not as separate practices to consider individually, but as a coordinated strategy that produces categorically better outcomes than main study alone. This is the strategic view of what to do around your main learning to actually maximize what it produces.

What the research actually shows about complementary activities and skill transfer, why specific side activities produce learning that main study can't produce alone, and how to actually design your side quest strategy for whatever you're trying to learn. This is one of those foundational frameworks that changes how you think about time allocation in learning. Let's get into it.

The Research on Complementary Activities
Let me start with what the science actually shows, because the specific benefits of complementary activities are more documented than most learners realize.
The foundational research on skill transfer is worth understanding. According to research from Northeastern's Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning, utilize multiple contexts… include multiple opportunities for practice with feedback in varied contexts. This strategy can improve the learner's ability to recognize when and how to apply specific prior knowledge. Provide learning environments that resemble the target environment. Facilitate deep learning… provide ample time and opportunity to identify underlying concepts, patterns, themes, and principles related to the knowledge or skill that is being introduced, since deeper learning contributes to later transfer. Read this carefully. Multiple contexts, varied practice, and connections to target environments all support skill transfer. Main study in a single context produces less transferable capability than the same study combined with varied side activities in different contexts.
The research on learning transfer specifically identifies three categories of supporting activities. According to Wilson Learning's research on 32 studies, we found that the learning transfer activities researched can be grouped into three primary categories. Learner Readiness Activities: These activities focus on ensuring that the learner is prepared for the core learning event. Learning Transfer Design Activities: These are activities embedded in the instructional design that are intended to support learning transfer. Practice activities, role modeling, setting learning goals, and application review and support are examples. Organizational Alignment Activities: These activities focus on ensuring that the organization supports the use of the skills. Read this. The specific pattern that produces transferable skills involves three types of activities: preparation, transfer-supporting design, and application context alignment. Each category represents different kinds of side activities that support core learning.
The specific finding about complementary online activities is worth noting. According to research on transversal skills development, students expressed satisfaction with complementary online activities, showing a preference for interactive videos and short videos under 4 min. Results demonstrated that socioformative project-based pedagogical practices, learning strategies, and online education positively correlated with the development of transversal skills. Read this. Complementary activities (specifically activities designed to develop the general capabilities that support learning across contexts) produce measurable improvements when combined with main learning. This isn't just about doing more of the main thing. It's about doing specific supporting things that make the main thing more effective.
The mechanism worth understanding involves what researchers call transfer. According to research on this, most people don't automatically apply what they learn in one context to different contexts. This transfer requires specific activities that build the general capability to see how learning connects across situations. Side activities that involve applying, discussing, teaching, or extending your main learning in different contexts build this transfer capability, which is often more valuable than deeper mastery of the specific context you originally studied in.
Why Side Quests Actually Amplify Main Learning
Let me name the specific mechanisms by which strategic side activities enhance what your main learning produces.
They provide multiple contexts for the same material. Your main study happens in a specific context (same physical space, same format, same cognitive approach. Side activities in different contexts) reading, conversation, application, teaching… expose you to the same underlying material through different lenses. This multi-context exposure produces more flexible retention than single-context study can produce.
They test your understanding in ways main study doesn't. Main study often lets you feel like you understand something without genuinely testing that understanding. Side activities (especially ones that require you to explain, apply, or produce something) reveal exactly where your understanding is incomplete. This diagnostic function is difficult to achieve through main study alone.
They connect learning to real-world use. Main study often disconnects from application. Side activities that involve using what you're learning in real contexts (actual conversations for language learning, actual projects for skill learning, actual teaching for knowledge learning) make the material usable rather than just knowable. The transfer to real use often requires these specific application activities.
They build supporting capabilities. Beyond the specific content you're learning, effective learning requires supporting capabilities… the ability to ask good questions, receive feedback well, work with others, apply insights across domains. Side activities develop these general capabilities in ways that focused main study doesn't. In Elden Ring, exploring optional areas doesn't just get you specific items… it develops the general skills of navigation, exploration, and combat versatility that make you more effective everywhere in the game. Your learning works similarly. Side activities build general capabilities that amplify everything else.
They provide different kinds of feedback. Main study often provides limited feedback (maybe from the material itself, maybe from occasional testing. Side activities can provide categorically different feedback) from other learners, from experts, from application results, from your own attempts to explain. This diverse feedback produces refinements that single-source feedback couldn't produce.
They maintain motivation during main study fatigue. Even valuable main study can become tedious over long time periods. Strategic side activities provide variety that maintains overall engagement with the learning project. Not procrastination or avoidance… complementary activities that keep the project fresh while continuing to build capability.
They surface knowledge gaps main study wouldn't reveal. Main study covers what you've decided to study. Side activities (especially conversations with others, teaching, or application) often surface knowledge you didn't know you needed. This gap-identification function is genuinely valuable because you can't study what you don't know you need to know.
The Categories of Effective Side Quests
Based on the research and my experience, side activities that support learning fall into specific categories. Understanding these helps you design a coordinated strategy.
Application side quests. These involve using what you're learning in real contexts. For programming: actual small projects. For languages: actual conversations. For a specific skill: actual applied practice. These transform theoretical knowledge into functional capability.
Teaching side quests. These involve explaining what you're learning to others. Study groups. Blog posts. Tutoring. Casual explanations to friends interested in what you're doing. Teaching activates the specific retention benefits I've written about before and reveals exactly where your understanding is thin.
Community side quests. These involve engaging with communities related to what you're learning. Online forums, professional groups, meetups, conferences. Community engagement provides feedback, exposure to how experts think, and awareness of what you don't yet know that others in the field consider important.
Consumption side quests. These involve consuming related content in different formats than your main study. Books, podcasts, documentaries, articles, videos. Different formats present the same underlying material through different framings, which builds more flexible understanding.
Creation side quests. These involve creating things related to what you're learning. Writing about it. Building projects with it. Making art related to it. Creation produces the specific engagement of the generation effect and produces artifacts you can look back on to see your progress.
Discussion side quests. These involve talking about what you're learning with others. Formal discussions, informal conversations, structured debates, casual chat. Discussion produces the specific benefits of articulating your understanding while receiving others' framings that expand your own.
Immersion side quests. These involve surrounding yourself with the material in your daily life. Changing your phone's language settings for language learning. Setting up your development environment to be present for programming learning. Environmental changes that keep the material in constant background presence.
Reflection side quests. These involve deliberately reflecting on your learning process. Journaling about what's working. Analyzing your progress. Thinking about how what you're learning connects to other things you know. Reflection produces the metacognitive awareness that improves subsequent learning.
How to Design Your Side Quest Strategy
Okay, the practical part. Here's how to actually design a coordinated side quest strategy for whatever you're learning.
Start with your main quest goal. What are you actually trying to accomplish through your main learning? Specific outcome, not vague topic. The side quests should support this specific goal, not compete with it or distract from it. In Baldur's Gate 3, effective side quests aren't random distractions… they typically develop your character, provide resources, or reveal information that helps with the main storyline. Your side quests should serve similar functions relative to your main learning goal.
Identify what your main study can't produce. What specific capabilities does your main study leave underdeveloped? If you're studying alone, you're not getting collaborative learning benefits. If you're studying without application, you're not building transfer capability. If you're studying without teaching, you're not activating retention benefits. Identify the gaps in what your main study provides.
Design side quests to fill specific gaps. For each gap you identified, design a specific side quest that addresses it. Not just any activity… an activity specifically chosen to address the specific gap. Application gap? Add specific project work. Community gap? Add specific community engagement. Teaching gap? Add specific explanation practice.
Match effort to strategic value. Not all side quests deserve equal effort. Focus most of your side quest time on the specific activities that produce the most value for your specific main goal. If application is what you most need, spend more side quest time on projects than on consumption. Match the resource allocation to strategic priority.
Build sustainable rhythm. Side quests should be sustainable across the timeframe of your main learning project. Not intense bursts followed by nothing. Consistent moderate engagement. Weekly or biweekly rhythms often work better than trying to do everything constantly.
Coordinate rather than fragment. Your side quests should work together as a coordinated strategy, not compete for attention as separate initiatives. Design them to reinforce each other. The teaching you do can be about the projects you're building. The community engagement can inform the applications you're pursuing. Coordination amplifies each activity's value.
Evaluate and adjust. Some side quests produce more value than others. Notice which are actually contributing to your learning versus which are just consuming time. Adjust based on evidence. This isn't easy in the moment because all side activities feel valuable while you're doing them. But some genuinely produce more capability than others for your specific situation.
What Doesn't Actually Count as a Side Quest
Some activities that feel like they should support learning but often don't in the way strategic side quests do.
Passive consumption without integration. Reading more books, watching more videos, and consuming more content without doing anything with it isn't strategic supplementation. It's often just more of the same passive learning that produces limited transfer.
Random related activity. Doing whatever seems tangentially related isn't strategic. Strategic side quests are chosen specifically to address specific gaps in your main learning. Random related activity is just fragmented attention.
Aspirational side quests you don't actually do. Planning elaborate side quests that never happen doesn't produce learning. Modest side quests you actually execute produce dramatically more than ambitious ones that stay in the planning stage.
Side quests that undermine your main quest. Sometimes what feels like a helpful side activity actually competes for the specific cognitive resources or time your main learning needs. Notice whether your side quests are supporting or competing with your main progress.
Community engagement that becomes primary. Some learners find community engagement so rewarding that it becomes their primary activity, with the actual learning receding into the background. Community engagement should support learning, not replace it.
The Bigger Lesson
Here's what I want you to take from all this. The framing of learning as primarily about main study time misses that the specific side activities you do around that main study substantially determine how much capability you actually develop. Two learners can invest the same main study time and produce categorically different outcomes based on what side activities they include. The learners who design coordinated side quest strategies typically develop capability faster and more transferably than learners who focus exclusively on main study.
If you've been putting most of your learning time into main study and finding that the transfer to real capability is disappointing, please consider that the missing element might be strategic side quests. Not more of the same main study… different activities that develop the specific capabilities main study can't develop on its own.
The specific practical move I'd suggest: for your current main learning project, identify one strategic side quest to add this month. Not a general activity… a specific activity that addresses a specific gap in what your main study provides. Application quest if you need transfer. Teaching quest if you need retention. Community quest if you need exposure to how experts think. Choose based on your specific gaps. Do it consistently for one month. Notice how it affects what you're producing from your main study.
In Stardew Valley, the players who thrive aren't the ones who focus only on farming… they're the ones who deliberately balance farming with mining, fishing, foraging, and community relationships. Each side activity supports and enriches the others. Your learning works similarly. The main quest matters. But the side quests are what turn adequate progress into meaningful capability. Design them deliberately. Execute them consistently. The compounding across your side quest strategy produces categorically more than main study alone.
