I want to start with a specific memory that took me years to understand properly. When I was in high school, I had a chemistry teacher who was, by any reasonable measure, one of the most bizarre humans I've ever encountered. She had a peculiar sense of humor that included doing terrible impressions of famous scientists, telling deeply strange chemistry-related puns, and occasionally interrupting her own lectures to laugh at things nobody else found funny. Most of my classmates thought she was slightly unhinged. What none of us realized at the time is that we were experiencing one of the most effective teaching methods available, though her execution of it was admittedly unconventional.

Here's what I noticed decades later. I remember an alarming amount of what she taught. Not just the concepts… the specific examples she used, the weird analogies she made, the terrible puns that made most of us groan. I can still remember her explanation of why noble gases are called "noble" because it involved her doing an aristocratic voice and refusing to interact with any of the "commoner" elements on the periodic table. Let me start with what the science actually shows, because the evidence here is more robust than the framing "having fun helps" suggests.

According to research summarized in Edutopia, neuroscience research reveals that humor systematically activates the brain's dopamine reward system, and cognitive studies show that dopamine is important for both goal-oriented motivation and long-term memory, while educational research indicates that correctly-used humor can be an effective intervention to improve retention. Read this carefully. Humor doesn't just make learning feel nicer. It activates the same dopamine system that supports motivation and memory formation. Same neurological pathway I've written about in previous newsletters about reward and learning. Humor is a specific mechanism for triggering that pathway.

The evidence gets more concrete when you look at specific studies. According to research covered in the same source, a Pew Research poll showed that viewers of humorous news shows such as The Daily Show and The Colbert Report exhibited higher retention of news facts than those who got their news from newspapers, CNN, Fox News, or network stations. Read that carefully. The people watching news wrapped in humor retained MORE factual information than people watching serious news programming. Same underlying facts. Different delivery. Measurably different retention. The comedy didn't distract from the information… it made the information stick better.

A separate research review found similar patterns across educational settings. According to the analysis, a study published in Applied Cognitive Psychology found that students who learned in a humorous environment performed significantly better in recall tests than those who were taught through more traditional, lecture-style methods. Another research effort demonstrated that participants who encountered humor while presented with a list of items displayed better recall compared to those who received the same list in a straightforward manner. The pattern replicates across contexts. Humor-embedded learning produces better retention than the same content delivered without humor. This isn't a marginal effect… it's substantial enough to show up as significantly different test performance.

Why Humor Specifically Works

Let me name the specific mechanisms, because understanding them helps you use humor deliberately rather than relying on it happening accidentally.

Dopamine activation. As covered above, humor triggers the same dopamine system that supports motivation and memory formation. Material learned in humorous contexts gets encoded alongside a dopamine signal that essentially tells your brain "this is worth remembering." Material learned in neutral contexts doesn't get this signal. Same content, different neurochemical accompaniment, different retention outcomes.

Attention capture. Humor is inherently attention-grabbing. Your brain automatically pays attention to unexpected, incongruous, or surprising things… which is essentially the structure of humor. This means humor-embedded material gets more attention during encoding than neutral material, and attention during encoding is one of the strongest predictors of retention. In One Punch Man terms, the absurdity of the humor itself is what makes Saitama's world memorable… the incongruity between his overwhelming power and mundane concerns creates the specific attention that makes viewers actually engage.

Emotional encoding. Emotional experiences get encoded differently than neutral ones. Your brain's memory system prioritizes emotional content because emotional content typically indicates importance from an evolutionary perspective. Humor produces positive emotional response, which triggers this prioritization. The material learned during laughter gets tagged as important-because-emotional, which supports later retrieval.

Stress reduction. Learning under stress is measurably worse than learning under calm conditions, as I've covered in previous newsletters. Humor reduces stress. This isn't just pleasant… it changes the neurochemical environment in which learning happens, making the encoding more effective. The learner who laughs periodically during study is operating in a more optimal brain state than the learner who grinds grimly through the same material.

Social bonding. When humor is shared, it builds social connection, which supports learning through multiple pathways. In educational contexts specifically, humor creates the sense of shared experience that makes teachers more approachable, students more engaged, and the whole learning environment more conducive to the risk-taking that real learning requires. According to research on this, teachers who use humor in the classroom are more approachable and likable, which may increase engagement and motivation to learn.

Cognitive engagement. Humor often works by requiring the listener to make unexpected connections… that's what "getting the joke" means. This cognitive engagement is itself a form of active processing that produces deeper encoding than passive reception. The mental work of understanding humor is doing learning work as a side effect.

Memorable frameworks. Humor often provides analogies, metaphors, or framings that make abstract concepts concrete. When my chemistry teacher explained noble gases through aristocratic snobbery, she gave me a framework that made the abstract concept graspable and memorable. Serious explanations don't always produce these memorable frameworks. Humorous ones often do.

The Distinction That Matters

I want to be careful about a specific point. Not all humor produces the learning benefits I'm describing. The research is clear that the humor has to be integrated with the content in specific ways to actually help.

According to the Edutopia summary, the study also discovered that humor can be perceived and appreciated without improving retention… essentially, the student can think a teacher is "funny" but not show an improvement in retention. So, just being silly may get your students' attention, but may not lead to enhanced learning. The teacher who tells unrelated jokes gets appreciation but doesn't produce learning improvements. The teacher whose humor is specifically tied to the content produces the retention benefits.

This distinction matters for your own practice. Random humor doesn't do the work. Humor that's specifically about what you're learning does. A funny mnemonic for something you're memorizing works. Watching a comedy while studying doesn't. A ridiculous analogy for a concept you're trying to understand works. A random joke between problems doesn't. The humor has to be about the material, embedded in the material, or applied to the material to produce the encoding benefits.

How to Actually Use This

Okay, the practical part. Based on the research and my own experience, here's how to actually incorporate humor into your learning in ways that produce the benefits.

Look for the absurd in what you're learning. Most subjects, when you look at them carefully, contain genuinely absurd elements. Historical events that were driven by petty personal grudges. Scientific phenomena with names that sound like insults. Mathematical operations that produce results that violate intuition. Business scenarios that read like satire. Actively notice these absurdities. They're your natural humor material embedded in the content you're already studying.

Make ridiculous analogies. When you're trying to understand something abstract, deliberately generate an absurd analogy for it. Not because the analogy is technically accurate, but because the ridiculousness makes it memorable. The more preposterous the comparison, the more likely it is to stick. This is essentially the technique used by memory palace practitioners, who deliberately make their memory images bizarre because bizarre images retain better than realistic ones.

Watch comedy about topics you're learning. For most subjects, there's someone doing comedy about it somewhere. History podcasts with humor. Science YouTubers who are actually funny. Comedic writers on economics, philosophy, or law. Consuming this material as a supplement to your primary learning produces the humor-encoding benefits while covering the same content.

Study with people who make you laugh. If you're learning collaboratively, choose partners who are actually fun to be with. The laughter you share during study sessions is doing memory work. Grinding through material with unfunny people is missing this benefit. In Cowboy Bebop, the crew works together partly because Spike and Faye's dynamic is genuinely funny… the humor is part of what holds the team together and makes their memorable moments memorable.

Make your notes silly. In your own private study notes, use humor freely. Ridiculous drawings. Absurd captions. Terrible puns. Silly acronyms. Your notes don't have to look professional. They just have to work for your retention. Making them entertaining to yourself produces the humor-encoding benefits when you review them later.

Teach humorously (to yourself if no one else). If you're using the teaching-to-learn technique, try teaching in a deliberately funny voice. Explain the material as if you were doing a comedy routine. This produces the humor-encoding benefits during your own explanation, which is when the deepest learning happens.

Follow instructors and creators who make you laugh. Whatever you're learning, seek out teachers whose delivery is entertaining. Not just factually correct… entertaining. The teacher who makes you laugh is doing more for your retention than the more comprehensive teacher who doesn't.

Don't take yourself too seriously. Some learners approach material with such gravity that they can't laugh at anything. This is counterproductive. The seriousness of your intent doesn't require seriousness of atmosphere. You can be committed to learning while also enjoying the absurdity of what you're learning. The commitment and the humor aren't in conflict.

What This Doesn't Mean

Some honest caveats.

Humor isn't a substitute for real engagement. Watching comedy without any actual study of the material doesn't produce the learning benefits. The humor has to be paired with actual engagement with the content. Comedy about physics isn't going to teach you physics if you don't actually study physics.

Not all subjects lend themselves equally. Some material is genuinely hard to make funny in ways that aid learning. Certain technical fields, safety-critical information, and material about serious topics have limited humor potential. Don't force it where it doesn't fit.

Individual variation is real. Different people find different things funny. What works for one learner won't work for another. Find the humor that actually makes you laugh, not the humor you think you should laugh at.

Inappropriate humor backfires. Humor that's cruel, off-topic, or unrelated to the content doesn't produce the learning benefits… it can actually interfere. The humor needs to be integrated with the material to help.

Manufactured laughter doesn't count. Fake laughing at things that aren't actually funny doesn't produce the neurochemical effects that real laughter produces. The benefits require actual amusement, not performed enjoyment.

The Bigger Lesson

Here's what I want you to take from all this. The cultural framing that treats serious learning as requiring serious atmosphere is missing something real. The research consistently shows that humor-embedded learning produces measurably better retention than humor-free learning. This isn't about learning being fun… it's about specific neurological mechanisms that humor triggers, which support the cognitive processes that produce durable memory.

If you've been approaching your learning grimly, thinking that seriousness of atmosphere reflects seriousness of intent, please consider that this framing might actually be costing you retention. The learner who laughs during study, who makes ridiculous analogies for concepts, who watches funny content about their subjects, is likely retaining more than the learner who maintains stern focus throughout. The commitment to the learning is expressed through consistent engagement, not through humorless atmosphere.

Ms. Davis, my weird chemistry teacher, was doing something neurologically sophisticated even though she probably wouldn't have described it that way. She was activating dopamine systems, capturing attention through incongruity, providing emotional encoding, reducing stress, and building memorable frameworks… all through the specific delivery choice of making her chemistry class entertaining. The result decades later is that I remember her material and forget material from more conventional teachers. This is available to you as a learner even without a teacher like her. You can bring humor into your own learning deliberately, and produce the same encoding benefits.

Let yourself laugh. Notice absurdity. Make silly analogies. Watch comedy about your subjects. Study with funny people. Take your intent seriously without requiring serious atmosphere. The learning that happens through laughter often outlasts the learning that happens through grim focus.
